The following images are some of my field sketches/paintings (works painted or sketched on location) made on a recent expedition to San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico. Sue Westin (my wife and professional artist) and I were two of the 30 artists chosen to participate in a field trip to the Sea of Cortez to gather information for future paintings - that will be exhibited in the traveling exhibit titled "THE SEA OF CORTEZ". The show is scheduled to premiere at The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute in 2013.
This trip and upcoming exhibition is organized and curated by David J. Wagner, Ph.D. and was led by Richard C. Brusca - author and scientist specializing in the Sea of Cortez. I would especially like to thank The Susan K. Black Foundation for their sponsorship of the bus transportation from Tucson to San Carlos and back.
The exhibition will no doubt focus on the flora and fauna around San Carlos in the state of Sonora (the area in which we explored) and will include Plein Air works, journal entries, finished studio paintings, sculptures and drawings. I will tell you more on this later.
More works from this trip will be posted as time goes on.

This is the field set-up I use ; Gouache, journals and different sketchbooks and panels

Cool blog. I love seeing the work in progress and your field sketching kit. It's amazing you can just walk outdoors with a few tools and return with such great artwork!
